Adventures of SV Papillon & her crew |
Travel Log June 2003 During the month of June we continued our trek northward, looking for cooler weather. Departing Jacksonville we wound our way through the marshes of Georgia, the coastal areas of South and North Carolina finally reaching Norfolk, VA on the 26th of June. I hope you enjoy the recount of our trip and the pictures we took along the way. Capt Jon & Ruby |
June 2, 2003 - departed Jacksonville this morning heading in a northerly direction. I passed through Fernadina Beach one of my places to stop along the waterway. I decided to bypass it this trip and stop on the return trip in the fall. Once you pass Fernadina Beach you soon reach the Florida/Georgia border. I had a near encounter with a Navy Sub that was coming in from offshore to Kings Bay Naval Base. The Coast Guard gave me a personal warning to hold my postion until the sub passed. I anchored for the night in Shellbine Creek. |

June 4, 2003 - living life at 6 mph motoring through the back country of Georgia where you may see nothing but marsh grass to the horizon for hours and hours. Beautiful birds of all types. Spending nights in places you will never hear of, Shellbine Creek, New Teakettle Creek, Walleys Leg, Kilkenny Creek and tomorrow night in Moon River. That one you may have heard of, providing you are about 50+. Last night a storm passed through just after we anchored. 30-50 mph winds and heavy rain, bucketfulls. We rode it out in New Teakettle Creek with two other boats and since it was still raining this morning we slept in and decided to stay an extra day for the front to pass. |

June 5, 2003 - with luck we will be out of the great state of Georgia today. We awoke with the sun peering in the hatch in Wright Creek. How did I know I was in Wright Creek because it wasn't the Wrong Creek. Ha, Ha. Headed out knowing we were going into some weather. Just before reaching Beaufort, SC it reared its ugly head so I radioed ahead and reserved us a spot in the downtown marina. The sweet voice on the other end assured me a spot for the night. The sky was black but looking at the radar there was a hole right over the marina. When we docked we were assisted by a former shrimper from Gulfport who moved here with his family about 4 years ago. Ruby was estatic to be near land and when she came up in the cockpit saw her first DUCKS. Never seen anything like that and was at a loss for Meow's. |

June 8, 2003 - good thing we don't have a plan because I could never follow it. I decided to travel some after leaving Beaufort with any weather several hours behind us. We made it to Fishing Creek and anchored for the night. Not a real good anchorage since it is deep and narrow. I am trying to get myself in position to shoot through Charleston. Again I may stop in the fall for a visit when I will have more time. A little rain and wind but eventually settled down and got a good nights sleep once Ruby stopped snoring. In the morning I got on the internet and checked the radar out of Charleston. Figured we had enough time to move to Church Creek. A good place to be on Sunday. |
